Rejecting a job offer when I am jobless

Should I take on any job that comes along my way, just because I am unemployed?

"Hello unemployment"

Calvin was retrenched from his job after 2 decades of loyal service. The industry had not been doing well for some years and he had foreseen the retrenchment coming. "After seeing my friends undergo retrenchment, I kind of expected this." Calvin thought. Having joined the 50s age group, Calvin wondered about the possible options ahead.

"What should I do now?"

The effect of being unemployed quickly hit Calvin. With no work to occupy him and no assurance of salary, he begun to worry. “Should I drive become a private hire driver? Or apply for similar jobs in the same industry? How about a career change to something else?” Running out of options, he turned to a #CareerCoach from Avodah People Solutions.

Through his #CareerCoach, Calvin walked through the emotions of being retrenched. His #CareerCoach helped him regain self confidence by recalling his past successes and guided him to reflect on what he wanted for the next stage of his life. The help process also revealed new areas where Calvin could develop himself in.

"I want my career to be fulfilling, allowing me to learn and grow"

Through the journey with his #CareerCoach, Calvin moved away from desperation and worry towards hope and excitement for his next career step. He gained self awareness and planned for his career in a holistic and meaningful way. He decided he wanted a meaningful career, which is a combination of his work and the next phase of his life.

Calvin explored new areas of volunteering and learning, built new connections and made new friends. He even turned down a full time leadership role offered to him. "It is not what I want. While the money would be good, I know this role will not be suitable for me." Calvin said. Calvin has gained clarity about his career.
