About The Event

Help your clients gain deeper committment and readiness to work towards their career goals through Motivational Interviewing. Gain valuable understanding and practice skills in the area of Motivational Interview through Roxanne Sawatzky.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative conversation style for strengthening a person's own career motivation and commitment to career change.

MI helps others become willing, able and ready for changes to their careers. MI is designed to strengthen an individual's motivation for and movement toward a specific career goal by eliciting and exploring the person's own reasons for the changes needed for their careers within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion.

Some behaviours (in the career counselling, coaching context) that can be addressed by MI are:

  • Increase ownership of reviewing their job search strategies and activities (resume/CV writing, job and labour market researching, etc)
  • Manage ambivalence or refusal to address one’s career thoughts and accompanying behaviours to career planning or career management
  • Address dysfunctional behaviours at the workplace

MI outperforms traditional career advice-giving for promoting sustainable career behavior change. In contrast to persuasion strategies that seek to compel career change through external mechanisms, MI strengthens an individual's intrinsic motivation through enhancing willingness, ability and commitment for positive career change. MI does not impose change, but rather supports sustainable change in a manner congruent with the person's own values, strengths and wishes for their career
